Apollo's lunar module had no pilot seats. Two astronauts stood at their control stations, supported and restrained by dedicated equipment. This arrangement saved mass and placed their eyes close to small windows overlooking the landing area.

A cabin for a different task

The lunar module did not land on Earth or fly through its atmosphere. Its cabin requirements therefore differed from those of the command module, where the crew used couches during launch and return. Removing seats helped make the lunar vehicle smaller and lighter.

Standing did not mean balancing freely

Astronauts were restrained during manoeuvres and had armrests for operating controls. The arrangement concerned flight operations; rest used other positions and, on later missions, hammocks. A standing crew therefore reflects a deliberate design decision rather than missing equipment.

Why a small window helped

A window needs strong glazing, a frame and pressure seals. Moving the observer's eyes closer can provide a useful view through a smaller opening. Removing seats and arranging visibility were therefore linked. The cabin served a short flight between lunar orbit and the surface rather than the comfort of prolonged seated travel.
