The lunar module's descent stage, left on the surface, served as the launch base. The ascent stage separated with its cabin, and its own engine carried the crew into lunar orbit. There it rendezvoused and docked with the command and service module.
Why a smaller engine sufficed
The Moon has weaker gravity and virtually no atmosphere. The ascent stage also left behind the landing legs and heavy descent engine. Its task was to reach lunar orbit, not launch directly to Earth's surface. These conditions greatly reduced propulsion requirements.
Ignition without surrounding oxygen
The ascent engine used fuel and oxidizer that ignited spontaneously on contact. Both were carried in onboard tanks. Systems and separation mechanisms were prepared before launch; the crucial subsequent task was a precise rendezvous with the mother spacecraft, not merely gaining altitude.
Why the stage did not fly straight to Earth
The lunar ascent stage could be small because another spacecraft waited in orbit with equipment for the journey home and atmospheric return. The plan required reliable rendezvous and docking after launch. It reduced requirements on the surface vehicle while placing a crucial task on navigation and coordination between the spacecraft.
