The landing sites retain lunar-module descent stages, scientific instruments, discarded equipment and traces of crew activity. Later missions also left lunar rovers. Astronauts brought back samples and necessary records rather than everything delivered to the surface.

Scientific equipment had its own mission

Some instruments measured the environment after the astronauts departed. Laser retroreflectors support ranging from Earth-based observatories without needing onboard electrical power. Not every surface instrument remained operational, however; powered experiments had finite lifetimes.

Traces are not indestructible

The Moon has no rain or ordinary wind, so many terrestrial erosion processes are absent. Impacts, thermal cycling and the space environment still alter its surface. Orbital images show larger objects and some disturbed areas rather than detailed views of every small item.

Why it cannot all be seen from Earth

Lunar equipment is extremely small compared with the Earth–Moon distance, preventing ordinary ground-based views of fine details. A much closer lunar orbiter can resolve landing sites better. Retroreflectors offer a different kind of observation: laser ranging measures returned light rather than photographing lettering or tools.
