How it works

What happens if a spacesuit is punctured?

The outcome depends on which layer is damaged and how rapidly gas escapes. An abrasion of the outer cover does not necessarily cause depressurization.

The outcome depends on which layer is damaged and how rapidly gas escapes. An abrasion of the outer cover does not necessarily cause depressurization. A breach of the gas-tight layer can threaten breathing and requires an emergency response.

A small leak and a major breach

The system may compensate for a limited leak from its supplies for a time. That consumes reserves and is not normal safe operation. With extensive damage, replacement gas may be insufficient. The astronaut follows the procedures for that suit and returns to a pressurized space as quickly as possible.

Why gloves are inspected

Hands frequently contact edges and tools. Checking wear and system readings is therefore part of spacewalk protection. A puncture does not automatically tear the suit apart like a balloon, and a person does not instantly freeze; the immediate dangers are loss of pressure and available oxygen.

Damage that may be superficial

A protective cover can be abraded while the pressure layer remains intact. A photograph of a damaged cover therefore cannot establish leak rate or remaining time. System readings and inspection of the actual damage matter. Multilayer construction separates protective functions so that every surface contact does not immediately release the breathing atmosphere.
