Falcon Heavy měl při svém prvním letu ukázat, že SpaceX dokáže spojit tři první stupně Falconu 9 do jediného těžkého nosiče. Dne 6. února 2018 raketa odstartovala z historické rampy LC-39A, vynesla Teslu Roadster s figurínou Starman a současně vrátila oba postranní stupně na pevninu.

Falcon Heavy was built by combining three modified Falcon 9 first stages: a center core and two side boosters. The flight tested their separation, recovery and the upper stage beyond Earth orbit. Its payload was a Tesla Roadster with the mannequin Starman, sent onto an orbit around the Sun after the second-stage burn.

Zajímavosti

  1. 27 motorů Merlin vytvořilo při startu tah přes 5 milionů liber.
  2. Dva postranní stupně dosedly téměř současně na LZ-1 a LZ-2.
  3. Tesla Roadster pokračovala po závěrečném únikovém zážehu horního stupně na heliocentrickou dráhu.
