#explainer
Chemically propelled Mars probes commonly travel for several months; roughly six to nine months is often quoted. It is not a fixed duration. Planetary positions, trajectory choice, available energy and arrival method all matter.
Mars is not a stationary target
Earth and Mars both orbit the Sun. A probe targets a future encounter location rather than the planet's current position. Its transfer path is itself an orbit around the Sun. Dividing the planets' current separation by an assumed speed usually does not describe the real flight.
Faster is not free
A shorter trip may need a more energetic departure and harder braking at arrival. A mission must balance launcher, propulsion, payload mass and destination conditions. Crewed expeditions add supplies, crew protection and a return journey. Cruise duration alone therefore does not give total expedition length.
Why journey can mean different phases
Cruise duration usually means time between Earth departure and Mars arrival. It need not include waiting for departure, surface operations or return. Arrival itself can mean flyby, orbit insertion or landing. Comparing two missions' advertised travel times therefore requires identifying exactly which events define the measurement.
