ESA brings European states together for projects that would be difficult for individual countries to undertake alone. Its work spans science missions, Earth observation, navigation, telecommunications, and European astronaut participation in crewed spaceflight.

The agency works with national space institutions and industry. In the story of launch vehicles, ESA represents the European branch of Ariane development and Europe’s effort to secure independent access to space.
