Testing systems in orbit

The crew monitored temperatures, vibration and thermal protection during the shuttle’s first time in space.

Columbia reached an orbit of roughly 166 nautical miles. Young and Crippen checked onboard systems and the orbiter’s response.

After landing, some tile damage from launch was found, but no defect threatened the return.
