Young and Crippen opened the payload bay doors, tested Columbia’s systems and completed 36 Earth orbits during the mission.
Opening the doors exposed radiators needed to reject heat. The crew checked the orbital manoeuvring engines, attitude thrusters and flight controls.
A camera showed missing tiles on the OMS pods. The crew could not directly inspect the orbiter’s underside before reentry.
