Columbia lifted off from Launch Complex 39A as the first complete crewed Space Shuttle stack.
The launch followed years of development. The orbiter’s main engines were joined by two solid rocket boosters.
No one yet had practical experience of how the winged orbiter would behave as part of a rocket.
