APOLLO 13 · CHAPTER 1 OF 5 · 11 April 1970
Launch
Apollo 13 launched on 11 April 1970 aboard a Saturn V rocket, carrying commander Jim Lovell, command module pilot Jack Swigert, and lunar module pilot Fred Haise toward a landing site in the Fra Mauro highlands.
Swigert had joined the crew only days before launch, replacing Ken Mattingly after Mattingly was exposed to German measles. The mission was intended to be the third crewed Moon landing, following Apollo 11 and Apollo 12.
