APOLLO 13 · CHAPTER 3 OF 5 · 13-15 April 1970

The Lunar Module as a Lifeboat

With the command module's systems shut down to conserve power, the crew moved into the lunar module Aquarius, using it as a lifeboat for power, oxygen, and propulsion.

Cabin temperatures dropped to around 3-4 degrees Celsius. Because the lunar module's carbon dioxide scrubbers could not support three astronauts for long, ground engineers designed an improvised adapter - nicknamed "the mailbox" - built from spare parts, plastic bags, and tape, letting the crew use the command module's square canisters in the lunar module's round fittings.
