Columbia returned to California after 37 circuits of Earth.
Engle and Truly brought the orbiter to an unpowered landing on Runway 23 at Edwards Air Force Base. Touchdown ended a flight of 54 hours, 13 minutes and 12 seconds, substantially shorter than the planned five days. [1]
The safe return completed a second launch-and-landing cycle for Columbia. Evaluation of the flight considered both the demonstrated reuse of the orbiter and the limitations revealed by the failed fuel cell, rather than treating the shortened schedule as the original plan. [1, 2]
