The 1962 Sea Dragon concept brought shipyard logic to space transport: a very large launcher would be built from steel, transported at sea, and launched from a submerged position. The ocean setting was meant to simplify handling and reduce demands on launch infrastructure.
The proposal never advanced beyond studies and engineering work. It remains a useful milestone, showing how the era of large launchers sought inexpensive transport for very heavy payloads long before today’s debate about reusability.
