NASA Rocket Gets First Multi-Point View Inside Radio-Disrupting Sporadic E Clouds
A NASA sounding rocket captured simultaneous multi-point measurements inside thin, metallic sporadic E layers high above Earth, offering new insight into these unpredictable radio-disrupting clouds.

NASA reports new results from a suborbital sounding rocket mission that flew directly through sporadic E layers — thin, metallic haze layers high in the upper atmosphere formed from vaporized dust left behind by burnt-up meteors. These layers appear and dissipate unpredictably, and are known to interfere with radio signals.
According to NASA, the mission achieved the first-ever multi-point measurements taken simultaneously from inside one of these layers, letting scientists see how the metallic particles are structured and distributed rather than relying on single-point or ground-based observations.
The data should help researchers better understand why sporadic E layers form so erratically and how they disrupt radio and GPS signals, potentially improving forecasting of these effects for communications and navigation systems.
