NASA Picks Blue Origin to Build Mars Communications Network

Blue Origin will build a high-bandwidth orbiter to relay data and navigation for Mars missions under a contract worth up to $700 million.

NASA announced Tuesday it has awarded Blue Origin a firm-fixed-price contract to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network, a next-generation relay system meant to give current and future Red Planet missions faster, more reliable communications and navigation support.

Per NASA's announcement, the deal is worth up to roughly $700 million and requires Blue Origin to deliver a high-performance telecom orbiter to Mars orbit. The network is meant to replace NASA's aging Mars relay fleet, which has served missions for years but is nearing the end of its usable life.

The upgrade matters because nearly every Mars lander and rover depends on orbiting relays to send data back to Earth and to receive commands, so a faster, sturdier network would directly boost the pace and volume of science returned from future missions.

This award adds Mars infrastructure to Blue Origin's growing NASA portfolio, positioning the company as a key player in sustaining long-term robotic and, eventually, human exploration of Mars.
