Four people, one lap around the Moon

The first crewed flight of the Artemis programme is a free-return loop, not a landing.

Artemis II carries a crew of four on a trajectory that swings around the Moon and returns without entering lunar orbit. The point is to check the parts that Artemis I could not: life support, crew displays, and the communications link with people aboard.

A free-return path was chosen deliberately — if the service module engine fails, the spacecraft comes home on gravity alone.
