VOSKHOD 2 · CHAPTER 2 OF 4 · 18. března 1965

The first spacewalk

At the start of the second orbit Leonov pushed through the Volga airlock and floated out. At 08:34 UTC he became the first human in open space — drifting on a five-metre tether while the Earth swept past below. He spent 12 minutes and 9 seconds outside.

Belyayev stayed in the cabin, monitoring Leonov's excursion and communications. The spacewalk itself went to plan at first — only on the way back did it become clear what a dangerous trap the suit held in vacuum.
