VOSKHOD 2 · CHAPTER 3 OF 4 · 18. března 1965

A ballooned spacesuit

In the vacuum Leonov's Berkut suit ballooned like a balloon. It stiffened so much that he could not fit back into the narrow airlock — and his fingers slipped out of the gloves. He risked being stranded outside.

Leonov made a risky decision: without consulting the ground he bled off some of the suit's pressure so it would soften and he could fit inside. That took him close to the threshold where decompression sickness sets in. He also had to enter the airlock head-first, the exact opposite of the rehearsed procedure, and turned around in the cramped space only with great effort.
