Around the Moon and into distant orbit

Orion entered a distant retrograde orbit around the Moon and spent several days there. The orbit gave the spacecraft the distance from Earth needed to test deep-space systems.

Optical navigation captured the Moon and Earth in a single frame — a modern echo of Apollo 8’s Earthrise. After the lunar operations succeeded, Orion began the trip home.
