NASA Brings New Antenna Deep Space Station 23 Online at Goldstone
A new 34-meter dish joins NASA's Deep Space Network, boosting capacity for tracking and communicating with spacecraft across the solar system.
NASA has activated Deep Space Station 23, a new antenna added to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California, according to the agency. The dish joins the Deep Space Network (DSN), the global system of giant antennas that keeps NASA in contact with robotic missions far beyond Earth.
The addition is meant to ease a growing bottleneck: aging antennas nearing retirement and a rising number of active missions have put heavy strain on the network's existing dishes. Deep Space Station 23 uses a flexible, beam-waveguide design that lets it handle multiple radio frequency bands, supporting both current spacecraft and future exploration programs.
Goldstone is one of three DSN complexes positioned roughly equidistant around the globe, alongside sites in Spain and Australia, so that at least one station can always see a spacecraft as Earth rotates. Bringing a new antenna online there strengthens that global coverage for years to come.
