SPACECRAFT MODULE · Soyuz
Descent module
The only part of the ship that returns to Earth. The crew sits in it in moulded seats for launch, descent and landing. A heat shield protects it, and parachutes plus soft-landing retrorockets fired just above the ground cushion the touchdown on land.
